for what it might be worth, the exampleof judges cited included members of
orders that followed two different rules (one benedictine, the other
augustinian). Seems as if whoever deputized them wanted all the bases
covered, so to speak. sd

i've always assumed that, in addition to whatever other qualifications they
might have re the specific issue at hand, these "judges" (what were they
called, i forget) were also appointed because they were acceptable, as
arbitrators, to both parties in the dispute.
though i have no actual evidence for this surmise --only the general idea
that
*enforcing* a settlement reached by a pre-accepted panel would have been
eversomuch more easy than one which was not so charged.
be interested to hear a different/expanded view.
