medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (17. October) is the feast day of:
Ignatius of Antioch (d. 107 or 117) Ignatius is one of the earliest and
most important sources we have on the primitive church. Indeed, it is in
his Seven Letters that the term "Catholic Church" first appears. According
to the acts of the martyrs, Ignatius was a disciple of John the Evangelist.
He was bishop of Antioch for 40 years before Emperor Trajan condemened him
to death. Together with other Christians, Ignatius was taken to Rome,
where he was killed by wild animals in the arena. On his way to Rome,
Ignatius wrote his Seven Letters to various Christian communities. In the
Eastern Church, Ignatius is honored as one of the fathers of Orthodoxy.
Solina (d. c. 300) Solina was a girl from Gascony who fled to Chartres to
avoid being forced to marry a non-Christian. She attended the execution of
the martyrs Sabinianus and Potentianus and then declared herself to be a
Christian---she was immediately exectued. Oddly, Sabinianus' and
Potentianus' feast day is 31. December.
Nothelm (d. 739/740) Nothelm became archbishop of Canterbury in 720. He
was a friend of Bede, and also exchanged letters with Boniface.
Andrew of Crete (d. 766 or 767) Andrew was a monk from Crete, killed in
Constantinople.
Gilbert of Citeaux (d. 1167) Not formally canonized; I include him in
hopes that somebody can provide more details. Gilbert was an Englishman,
who became abbot of Citeaux in 1163. He was highly regarded and helped
strengthen the Cistercian order further. After his death, the Cistercians
recognized him as "Gilbert the Great" or "Gilbert the Theologian."
