Round Table Discussion hosted by the LSE Language Centre as
one of the registered events for the European Year of Languages
2001.
The ability to use a language fluently is more than about
communication. Language helps to create one's identity, and can
either bind that identity to a country, or can sometimes come into
conflict with the predominate culture. This can be well-managed as
the case of the Swedish speaking minority in Finland, or can be a
difficult issue as is now the case of Russian in the Baltic States.
To what extent are the UK's Celtic languages a vibrant part of our
linguistic culture, or are they no longer relevant? And lastly, is
English - now newly defined as English as a Lingua Franca - the
quick-fix solution to our global identities? You are invited to join a
panel of experts to discuss the issue.
This event is free and open to all, no ticket is required.
