JRF RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (R02/06)
To undertake work on a new Joseph Rowntree Foundation funded research
project into "The Organisational Context of Retirement: the impact of
employers' age management policies and practice on the process of
retirement". The main focus of the research is an examination of the extent
to which individuals experience and exercise choice when deciding to retire.
By interviewing employees, ex-employees and personnel managers in three
large local organisations the research aims to understand the dynamics of
the retirement decision, particularly the role of employers. The research is
being undertaken by Dr. Sarah Vickerstaff and John Baldock (of the School of
Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research) and Dr. Linda Keen (of the

The post is for one year, starting in February 2002. The appointment will be
made on the Research RA1A scale, points 4-6 (£17,451 - £19,486 pa) according
to experience. There is a possibility of registering for a postgraduate
research degree.
The main duties of the post will be setting up and conducting interviews,
maintaining research records and undertaking computer based analysis of
interview materials. Applicants should therefore have a good first degree or
MA in a social science discipline and preferably have experience of
undertaking social science research, including interviews. They should also
be computer literate. Desirable qualities of the successful applicant are:
· experience of interviewing
· knowledge or experience of personnel policy issues and practice
· driving licence
