A recent study was published in the Journal or Science and Medicine in Sport, Vol 4 : 1, pp 104 - 115 entilted "Quadriceps Concentric and Eccentric Exercise 2: Differences in Muscle Strength, Fatige and EMG activity in Eccentrically exercised sore and Non Sore Muscles.  In the discussion,the proposed causes of DOMS and how they might effect strength is explored.  A reference is made to the chemical changes that occur within the muscle:
"..although they may well be associated with phagocytosis and cell necrosis, resulting in oedema and the accumulation of histamines...."
This was drawn from :
Armstrong, RB (1984).  Mechanisms of exercise induced delayed onset muscular soreness: a brief review.  Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.  23: 429-435.

I admit I have not read this study.
