Hi Alison:
I haven't seen any responses to your inquiry so I will try to offer you what
I can.
I would be very surprised if there are many hospitals that do not offer
daily PT for patients with THA. I would also expect that it would be daily
until d/c, 5-7 days sounds typical. I think that who goes to rehab
(inpatient) and who goes home varies greatly depending on many factors.
Unfortunately pt. needs and function are only part of the equation. Often
who goes to rehab. varies by region, surgeon and financial considerations.
If the pt. goes home from the acute hospital they would likely receive PT
tiw to qd.
Patients with complications or those who are progressing slowly are the most
likely candidates for out pt. PT. Most pts. do not require out pt. PT. Hope
this helps.

| I wonder if our american list members can help.
| We are doing some evidence based practice work on rehab after THR. Lit
| searches has revealled there isn't alot written - es[ecially from the UK.
A
| couple of articles we critiqued this week were looking at physio
utilisation
| and rehab effects in USA. They talked of the acute care apparently from
1 -7
| days and then rehabilitation. One paper implied that not all patients had
| physio during the acute phase and I assume by the discharge to a
| rehabilitation centre is further in-patient care.
|
| Can anyone out there clarify how it works out there! What I would also
like
| to know is does anyone see these patients as out patients? I know they do
in
| a certain practice in Western Australia.
|
|
| It just shows how difficult it can sometimes be to relate article results
to
| your own demographics.
|
| Thanks in advance
