But what wonderful worms they are! A well designed museum is a thing
of beauty.
Personally, I like museums where things happen. I was disappointed
recently when my favorite science-and-technology museum did away with
its papermaking machine and its ship model test basin, both of which
were very large and very old. But some of my earliest childhood
recollections were watching the paper come out of the machine and
watching the different ship hulls react to the water.
Modern museum designers seem to believe that they need to dazzle the
children with cartoon-like exhibits, when a machine actually doing
something is fascinating and instructive at the same time. A working
print shop on the floor of a museum is always an instant hit, because
the children can actually see a page printed, and take home an
instant souvenir.
You don't need a fancy outfit of contrived gadgets and fanciful
graphics, just everyday technology doing its thing. The world is a
fascinating place.
