Grounded in Europe: Tanztheater and its Legacy
A Practitioner Friendly Symposium with Talks, Workshops, Films and
Presentations
30 November – 2 December, Roehampton, University of Surrey, London
The Symposium will investigate not only the historical contexts - out of
which Tanztheatre emerged - but also its impact and legacy through practical
and discursive sessions, including performances and screenings of rare
footage. In particular, the Symposium will explore the choreographic and
devising processes, the education and training of the performer and the
effect it has had on audiences for the performing arts, as well as the other
cultural contexts within which new manifestations of dance theatre have
emerged.
Grounded in Europe is organized by the Centre for Performance Research
(CPR), in association with Roehampton, University of Surrey – on whose
London campus the event will be held, 30th November – 2nd December.
Confirmed contributors include:
· Sondra Fraleigh – Chair and Professor of the dance programme at SUNY
Brockport College, trained by Wigman, a professional choreographer and
author of Dancing into Darkness, Butoh, Zen and Japan talking on the
relationship between Japanese Butoh, German Expressionism, Da Da and
Surrealism.
· Guy Cools – Artistic Coordinator for the Arts Centre Vooruit in Gent has
previously collaborated with companies such as Les Ballets C. de la B. and
Theatergroep Hollandia, talking on the integration of German Ausdruckstanz
into the practice of contemporary artists / companies Les Ballets C. de la
B., Caterina Sagna and Karin Ponties
· Valerie Preston-Dunlop – Laban trained – giving an illustrated talk on
Rudolph Laban as the initiator of the Tanztheater movement in Europe and
giving a short workshop on the re-creations of Laban’s Die Grünen Clowns she
has undertaken with colleagues.
· Ana Sanchez Colberg – of the Laban Centre London, talking about the impact
of Tanztheater and giving an introductory workshop into the German
Ausdruckstanz technique, a core aspect in the development of the work of
contemporary Tanztheater artists such as Pina Bausch, Mats Ek, Susanne Linke
and William Forsythe.
· Meg Mumford – of the University of Glasgow, talking on Dance as embodiment
of National Identity: Tracing the residue and rejection of interwar German
dance in Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater.
· Carol Brown – a choreographer of theatre dance and installation
performance giving a lecture demonstration on the German Ausdruckstanz
technique through the work of Tanzgruppe Bodenwieser originally from Vienna.
Bodenwieser, a contemporary of Wigman & follower of Laban went on to develop
her own distinctive pedagogy and choreographic form.
