Lecturer in Roman Archaeology (Fixed-term)
This vacancy arises due to the absence on research leave during 2001/2 of
Professor R J A Wilson, after his successful application to the Arts and
Humanities Research Board under their Research Leave scheme. Duties will
include carrying out such lecturing as may be agreed with the Head of
Department, arranging seminars in connection with those lectures,
supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, and undertaking
such administrative tasks as the Head of Department may from time-to-time
The undergraduate modules which need to be taught are: early Roman Britain,
Roman Africa, Roman Africa fieldtrip (one week's study-tour of Tunisia).
The postgraduate modules are the archaeology of Roman Mystery Religions and
early Christianity. Candidates should indicate in a written statement,
attached to their application, a detailed proposal for any modules or
substitute modules that they propose to teach in total or partial place of
those listed above. It is not essential that the successful candidate
teaches these exact modules (although the ability to do so will be
considered an advantage).
An enthusiastic and lively individual is required with a proven ability to
provide provocative and stimulating teaching for both undergraduate and
graduate (MA) students. The successful candidate is likely to be a
specialist in some area of Roman archaeology and have, or expect to shortly
obtain, a PhD. Previous teaching experience in a university environment
will be considered an advantage.
Salary will be within the range £20,267 - £24,193 per annum, depending on
qualifications and experience. This post is available from 1 January 2002
and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 30 September 2002.
