I thought I'd send this tip to other colleagues in case they feel in the
mood to take their objections to Burchill's article further.

This is precisely why I feel the Press Complaints Commission is more
effective than the letters columns, which are always full of responses to
Burchill's garbage. The Guardian won't get any positive mileage from a PCC
adjudication if it comes down against the newspaper, i.e. nothing in terms
of free copy.
It couldn't be easier to send a message to the PCC. Go to
http://www.pcc.org.uk/complaint/complaintform.asp
It takes no more than a few minutes to fill in the form and to send it.
Once you have sent it, you get a copy of your complaint by way of a
thankyou message. You then send it as hard copy with a copy of the
offending article.
You have to identify how you believe the PCC's Code of Practice has been
breached and which specific clause(s) of the Code you are complaining
under. My own reading of the Code led me to conclude that the article was
in breach of 13 (i): Discrimination ("The press must avoid prejudicial or
pejorative reference to a person's race, colour, religion, sex or sexual
orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability.")
Burchill's comments on the German children she encountered in themselves
fall into this category. She seems to be saying that they are genetically
programmed to be prone to carrying out atrocities when they grow up.
Of course, there is also another form of action. Stop buying the paper on
Saturdays until it packs JB off to another paper, though I do think the
Sun's standards are too high for her.

I read Julie Burchill's piece and thought it was unfunny, ignorant and
completely mad, as most of Ms Burchill's contributions to The Guardian
are. But I don't want to send in a response, because I think that's
why the paper prints her rubbish - to outrage. Maybe if she stops
being controversial they'll stop printing her and she can go and work
for The Sun, where she evidently belongs.
