The Anagogical Sense in Medieval Exegesis
The Programming Committee of the Leeds International Medieval
Congress will sponsor one session concerning anagogical
exegesis in the Middle Ages. When it comes to spiritual exegesis,
many scholars have focused on either the allegorical or tropological
sense, and so the history and development of anagogical readings
remains underdeveloped. We welcome papers which will examine
this aspect of medieval exegesis. Topics may be drawn from any
time period between 300 and 1500 CE, and possible areas of
research include, but not limited to: anagogical exegesis and
monastic contemplation, ‘rules’ of anagogical exegesis, prayer as
hermeneutic, scholastic attitudes toward anagogical readings.
