medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. September) is the feast day of:
Felix and Regula (d. c. 302) Legend tells that Felix and Regula were
siblings, part of the Theban Legion. When the majority of the legion was
killed in c. 280/300 they were able to flee. They were, however, martyred
by beheading in Zurich in c. 302. According to legend, both carried their
own severed heads to their graves.
Paphnutios (one of many) (d. c. 360) The Egyptian Paphnutios was tortured
and mutilated in the persecution of Christians carried out by Emperor
Maximinus (305-313). In c. 313 the now one-eyed and crippled Paphnutios
became a bishop, apparently somewhere in upper Egypt. He took part in the
Council of Nicaea. Paphnutios also won some fame for his view (inspired by
his own marriage) that priests who married before their consecration should
continue to live with their spouses.
Deiniol (d. c. 584) The Welsh monk Deiniol founded the great monastery of
Bangor Iscoed in northern Wales, as well as the monastery of Bangor Fawr in
Carnarvon. According to Bede, Bangor Iscoed was one of the most important
monasteries of British Christianity, at times containing over 2000 monks.
In later times, Deiniol was credited as the "first bishop of Bangor."
Vinciana (d. 653) Vinciana, born in c. 600, supported her brother Landoald
as a missionary in England. She died in Wintershofen (Belgium), and her
relics made it to St. Bavo in Ghent.
Ludwig IV (d. 1227) Although never formally canonized, Landgrave Ludwig IV
of Thuringia was already honored as a saint during his lifetime by his
people. Ludwig was the husband of Elisabeth of Thuringia. He was born in
1200, and married Elisabeth in 1221. Ludwig was deeply religious and
supported his wife despite all criticisms by his relatives. Ludwig set out
on crusade with Frederick II in 1227, but fell ill and died in southern
Italy.
