medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. September) was the feast day of:
Maternus of Cologne (d. early fourth century) Maternus is the first bishop
of Cologne of whom historians are certain. He is listed among the
participants at councils in Rome in 313 and Arles in 314. Maternus was a
confidant of Emperor Constantine. Many legends developed about Maternus,
including that he was a disciple of St. Peter, and that besides Cologne he
was also bishop of Trier. He is also supposed to have been resurrected
with a staff belonging to St. Peter after dying.
The Exaltation of the Cross. This feast commemorates the restoration of
the relic of the True Cross to Jerusalem (which had been taken as a war
trophy by the Sasanian Persians) by Emperor Heraclius in the early seventh
century. For some reason this feast was retained in the 1969 revision of
the Roman calendar, but the feast of the discovery of the True Cross was
supressed.
Notburga of Eben (d. 1313) Notburga still enjoys a strong folk veneration
in Tirol, and her life as a serving woman has been commemorated in stories,
plays, and songs. According to legend, Notburga was born in 1265 in
Rattenberg am Inn, and already as a child was employed by the count of
Rottenburg im Unterinntal as a servant. From the beginning, Notburga gave
much of her food to the poor and beggars of the region, despite being
harshly criticized for this, and finally dismissed from her work. After
that, she became servant to a farmer in Eben, but eventually returned to
Rottenburg, where she served and was honored by the comital family. Her
cult was approved in 1862.
