In reply to Christine's questions, this is West Berkshire's policy
There will be no charge for:
· Reasonable enquiries for data from the public and local societies which fulfil an educational or community service and promote a better understanding of the archaeological resource and the work of the West Berkshire Heritage Service.
· Academic based research enquiries aiming to improve understanding of the local and/or regional archaeological resource
· Enquiries for advice directly relating to a planning application. Early enquiries are encouraged in order to enable the developer to recognise the importance of the archaeological resource.
There will be a charge for:
· Land searches relating to the prospective purchase or development of a land parcel or area of land
· An enquiry where data is being collected for commercial use, for example: in connection with development proposals, via a consultant or for use in a commercial publication.
Scale of charges
Staff time written enquiries: Minimum charge of £30 excluding VAT for the first ½ hour
Thereafter £15 excluding VAT per ½ hour
Staff time with visitors: Visitors to the SMR will not be charged for staff time in familiarising themselves with the record but commercial users will be charged if intensive staff assistance is required (i.e. after the first ½ hour charges as for written enquiries will apply)

If everyone isn't too exhausted dealing with the flurry of emails on this topic, I would like to start another query on SMR disclaimers - no liability can be accepted, use only as directed kind of thing and enquiry forms. Do all SMRs send out enquiry forms to be returned so that they have a signature from users accepting their terms and conditions? Or do you just warn people of potential problems, etc when you send them the data (mainly what we do). It seems a bit convoluted to a) publicise your service b) receive letters from the public c) send out enquiry forms d) receive enquiry form back signed e) send out SMR data - possibly with a User Survey to monitor satisfaction and f) receive survey back. Any useful tips, or copies of disclaimers I can compare and contrast?
May be someone should collate all this SMR info - Martin?
