International International Ph.D. Program at the Netherlands Research
School of Women's Studies (NOV)
Registration: October 1, 2001
Duration program: February 1 2002 - May 31 2002
Place: Utrecht University
The NOV offers a special four-month Intensive Ph.D. Program for foreign
students who are in the planning stages of their Ph.D. work and who wish to
familiarize themselves with Women's Studies. And for those whose graduate
work is well underway, but find that they lack sufficient
training/knowledge in (a particular realm of) Women's Studies. The
International Ph.D. Program is an attractive short-term package, allowing
for thematic specialization in one of two areas, and accommodates a wide
variety of academic interests.
Candidates in this program begin their training by taking a general
introductory course in Women's Studies, in which they learn to recognize
and analyze the material and symbolic realities of gender from within a
broadly (inter)disciplinary perspective. They subsequently choose to
continue their work with the NOV by concentrating on one of the following
research areas:
A. BODY ISSUES
B. GENDER AND SOCIAL POLICY
In addition to the introductory and one thematically-organized set course,
candidates partake in a tutorial.
A tutorial consists of four sessions extending over a period of four
months. Small groups of students work closely with a staff member of the
school. If the candidate doesn't fit in the tutorial, he/she can follow
four Individual Coaching Sessions with a NOV staff member.
Finally, all candidates in the Intensive International Program will be
expected to attend the meetings of a special Ph.D. mentor-group.
Mentor-group sessions take place once a month and are set up as a research
seminar. The aim of the three-hour seminar is three-fold. First, meetings
serve as a platform for international candidates to present their research
projects and discuss them with members of the school's academic staff.
Second, the mentor-group provides ample opportunities for social exchange.
And third, participants will have regular and direct access to sources of
practical information on academic resources and possibilities for
networking. The seminar is convened by one off the NOV staff members.
Practical organisation is in the hands of the International Ph.D.
co-ordinator.
Irrespective of thematic concentration, the Intensive International Ph.D.
core-package thus consists of the following requirements:
1) General Introductory Course in Women's Studies
2) One special course, either 'The Body in Feminist Theory and Practice'
or 'Gender, Social Policy & The Politics of Welfare States'
3) A tutorial
4) Monthly mentor-group meetings
Depending on individual needs and the facilities provided by candidates'
home institutions, each participant in the international program may
further apply for supervision with one of the school's faculty members.
This option is especially relevant to those who plan to complete all their
Ph.D. work with the NOV.
Candidates are welcome to enrol in any of the regular courses offered by
the NOV between February and May, which are all offered in English and
taught from broadly multicultural, (Western) European perspectives. However
there will be financial consequences regarding these extra courses.
Additional possibilities exist for candidates to participate in advanced
undergraduate (MA) courses taught in various Women's Studies programs at
Dutch universities, as well as courses offered by other (post)graduate
research schools. Be prepared to pay extra for this.
The International Ph.D. program will be launched with a welcoming session
in February 2002. This session serves to provide candidates with further
details on the training program and general background information on
Women's Studies and Practices of Feminism in the Netherlands.
The Intensive International Ph.D. program runs from February 1 until May
31, 2002. Registration closes on October 1, 2001. The tuition fees for this
program are 5.000,- Dfl. (2.269 EURO). This is without living expenses.
