However, there were a number of politicised women who continued to remain in
the abusive relationship, usually a consequence of the lack of service
provision for disabled women attempting to leave abusive relationships, lack
of knowledge surrounding dv and disability specific issues, and time and time
again, - disbelief from informal and formal networks).>>>
Pauline,
I have never advocated that we should not hear and respect disabled women's
voices, so the questions is…. what happens to information which has been
gathered and how is it fed back to the participants, so that they can
understand and identify with it, within an academic and disability rights
framework? (I am assuming that participants will receive information about
the research findings).
Regarding the increase in abuse towards disabled women who come out as being
politically aware. The disability rights movement "should" be able to act as
a catalyst, if you are lucky enough to know about it AND identify with it.
On the other side of the coin, is the disability rights movement open to a
non-judgemental approach to parasites who might not have the expected
socialisation, skills, articulation (what ever that means) and politics to
recognise what is expected of them within a disablist society.
I think a more liberating approach might be in enabling disabled women to
draw upon their own identity and understanding of the discrimination they
have experienced through [disability] politics and research, so they can
advocate for their own support needs and empowerment. Which for many, the
first steps, might be an inroad into the independent living movement rather
than the more traditional, (usually ill-informed), mainstream, service
provisions.
The political is political.
