Mrs. Lewis's recent reference to "Ford 'O Kabul River" prompts me to
ask if anyone can direct me to details of the event behind that poem.
Via the Society's website I recently learned of, and subsequently
purchased by mail, Michael Halliwell's splendid version of some of
the Barrack-room Ballads, a CD sold by an Australian firm under the
title Soldier Soldier.
One particularly affecting song, I found, was Ford 'O Kabul River. The
notes with the CD give only the sketchiest account of the historical
incident in question, the drowning of much of a squadron of the 10th
Royal Hussars, March 31 1879.
A search on the internet has turned up very little more.
I would be grateful to be directed to any source of more detail on this
action.
