Although the huge Angers Apocalypse tapestries that Kate Sowley
mentioned are an exception (in almost every respect), the most
favoured location for elaborate figural tapesties in churches, so far
as I've been able to gather, is decorating the choir stalls, which by
the 13th century, at least, had become substantial enclosures, of
stone and/or wood, that would have affected both comfort and
acoustics.
