medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Edward Peters too has criticized the idea of "Inquisition," and Bernard
Hamilton has written a revisionist overview of the same.
Peters, Edward, Inquisition (New York : Free Press ; London
: Collier Macmillan, c1988).
Hamilton, Bernard, The Medieval Inquisition (New York : Holmes & Meier,
c1981).
A few things to keep in mind in that context: bishops had been the
original judges in matters of heresy on the local level; Nicholas
Eymeric's description of inquisitors as papal judges delegate (I once did a
paper on this topic) fits the inquisitors into a medieval judicial
context. They represented the pope locally to deal with the problem of
theological error. I would hesitate to use the term Inquisition before
centralized organs to coordinate such activities were founded in Rome & Spain.
