medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. August) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Rome (d. 370) Eusebius was a priest in Rome. He was captured
by enemies, who cut his tongue out---despite which Eusebius is supposed to
have spoken again and praised God. He died in prison, and is accounted a
martyr.
Fachanan (d. late 6th cent.) Fachanan was probably the first bishop of
Ross in Ireland. He founded the famous monastic school in what is now
Rosscarbery. He is venerated today as the patron of the diocese of Ross.
Werenfrid (d. c. 760) Werenfrid was an English priest and missionary in
Frisia; he worked with Willibrord.
Eberhard of Einsiedeln (blessed) (d. 958) Eberhard was provost of
Strassburg cathedral. Later he became a companion of Benno of Metz and
erected at the site of Benno's hermitage the monastery of Einsiedeln in
934. Eberhard became its first abbot, and directed Einsiedeln's first
great flowering.
Meinhard (d. 1196) Meinhard was an Augustinian canon, born in c. 1120. He
founded a mission station in Lettland and in 1186 was named missionary
bishop to the Livonians. Although he had some success, he was disappointed
that he did not win more converts.
