medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As far as I know, both monasteries still claim to have the body of Saint
Benedict--and neither pope or the Benedictine Order has made an judgment
concerning the authenticity of relics in either place. In our congregation,
the Swiss-American, we celebrate both the feast of Benedict's transitus and
the translation of his relics as Solemnities--but by celebrating the second
as a Solemnity, I'm sure no one is claiming that the Fleury set is the more
authentic. When I was in the novitiate, I was told that the Cassino monks
claimed that their body was truly that of Saint Benedict, for during the
bombardment during WWII, a bomb fell on the tomb of Benedict but failed to
detonate, a miracle indicating the protective presence of the saint. There
was also a story about one body having a well-developed voice-box or
something like that and that showed that the person was truly a monk and
therefore Saint Benedict. It sound (and sounds) fishy to me!
