Dear all,
Lorna Campbell has kindly sent me the minutes from a recent CEN/ISSS
workshop meeting she attended, and the following is a summary of the
metadata specific issues which were addressed at the meeting:
7th meeting of the CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies , July 2-3,
2001, Brussels, Belgium
A report was given about the work of the CEN/ISSS project team focussing on
the internationalisation of the IEEE LTSC Learning Object Metadata (LOM)
specification. The following key issues were amongst those identified in
this report:
· Review of all data elements and vocabularies of LOM 6.0 Feb 2001
· Identification of data elements to be further developed
· Recommendations on adaptation/ modification of data elements (especially
for interoperability)
CEN/ISSS is also carrying out work on the translation of the specification
into different languages, including Italian and Greek: the importance of
the validation process for translations was highlighted as the most
important part of the translation process.
Further internationalisation concerns are focussed on mappings between
thesauri in different languages, and the need for translations of
definitions of terms, as well as of the terms themselves, in order to
ensure consistency of use on an international scale. There was also concern
about how to match pedagogy and technology and discussion of numbers vs
textual descriptors.
The workshop identified a need for a new pair of terms for the relationship
element: hasTranslation and isTranslationof.
Best wishes
Jenny
