Please forgive me if you think this may be a little off-topic - but where
would we all be if in 1701 Andrew Cranston had not made the imaginative
leap, and allowed the people of Reigate to borrow the books in his parish
library? We celebrated 150 years of public libraries last year - but
there's also been a relevant 300th anniversary this year. To help
celebrate it, the trustees are holding a study day. Programme and booking

LIBRARIES AND CHURCHES - PAST AND PRESENT
A study day to mark the Tercentenary of the Cranston Library, founded on
14th March 1701.
Date and time: Saturday 15 September 2001, 10.00am - 5.00pm
Venue: Reigate Grammar School, Reigate Road, Reigate, Surrey RH2 0QS
Cost: £18.00 per delegate, to include a buffet lunch, and morning and
afternoon refreshments.
The Grammar School is adjacent to St Mary Magdalene Church, where the
Cranston Library is situated. Visits to the Library will be organised
during the day.

Michael Perkin (Newbury) on `Parochial libraries in their settings',
illustrated by slides made during his revision of the directory of
parochial libraries to be published in 2002.
David Wykes (Dr Williams's Library) on `Nonconformist ministers and their
libraries'.
David Williams (Church House, Westminster) on `The care of parish libraries
today'.
Mark Purcell (The National Trust) on `Private libraries in Surrey in the
18th century'.
Jane Francis (Haddenham) on `Clergy libraries in Buckinghamshire in the
18th century (including the Kederminster Library).
Nigel Ramsay (London) on `Cathedral libraries around 1700'.
Martin Roth (Reigate) on `The Cranston Library 1701-2001: the survival of a
library'.
K.A. Manley (University of London) on `Cranston, Plume, and other library
benefactors'.
