Out For The Count .....
Floored by the Census? This Library Association North West Local Studies
Group day-school combines a study of what census
returns, in general, have to offer, with a more focused look at the
forthcoming 1901 census
WEDNESDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2001
The morning session - with talks by Dr. Sandra Hayton (Salford Local
Studies Library) and David Gatley (Staffordshire University) will look at
the importance of census returns as a source for local and family
historians. In the afternoon Margaret Brennand, 1901 Census Project
Communications Co-Ordinator at the PRO will describe the project to
digitise the 1901 returns and will look at current issues, such as how the
census is going to made available, how people will pay to use it, the role
of the Advisory Panel and the provision made for institutional users such
as record offices and libraries. An 'Open Forum' session will allow those
present to ask questions on the census.
