Dear All,
Recent roadworks in Sheerness have revealed a deep, 7m wide circular
brick-lined pit, with rendered walls. Situated in the middle of an urban
street, this has at its centre a heavy cast iron spindle held in two
wheel-shaped housings. The spindle is attached to a wide "turntable"
constructed of girders and plates. A service tunnel leads off from the pit
and may have led to the cellar of a shop, possibly the office of an
electricty company.
The structure was originally interpreted as a tram turntable but
photographs, tram experts and cartographic evidence seem to rule this out.
The area in close proximity to the town centre and is commercial/residential
not industrial.
Does anyone know of anything similar and, if so, what was its function?
