medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list members,
I deleted an unrecognised email last night and then realised it was
probably an attempt by the newest virus, SirCam, a virus which raids your
address book and also-- a new twist-- your MyDocument file. It then sends
one of these sensitive files out to everyone on the address list.
I don't know where it came from but am posting this in case it reached me
via the M-R list, in which case everyone else's system is also at risk.
The message itself is harmless, and always begins "Hi, how are you." (Mine
certainly did.) The attachment contains the virus and SHOULD NOT be opened
(we all know that, anyway.) Having deleted it before I realised what it was
(I never open attachments from unknown sources) I can't be certain of the
source but it was something like [log in to unmask] The suspicion that
this means Glasgow, Kentucky, prompts me to wonder if it originated via the
List, since I know nobody in Kentucky and nobody called Cassy.
I realise that by reacting in this way I am compounding the effect of the
virus. Does anyone know what proportion of the damage to the Web is caused
by people emailing all their friends to say "Beware of this virus"? However
I am posting this out of concern for other members of the list. I run a
Mac, and viruses don't usually come my way.
Be alert. The List needs lerts.
Best wishes,
Pat
