medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. July) is the feast day of:
Gervasius of Le Mans (sometime between 300 and 500) Gervasius was a deacon
of Le Mans, murdered while returning from a pilgrimage to Rome.
Palladius (450) Palladius was the first bishop sent from Rome to Ireland.
Before Celestine I consecrated him as bishop in 430/31, Palladius was a
deacon in Auxerre. His orders in Ireland were to strengthen the
already-existing Christian communities in Ireland and to protect them
against heretical influences. In Irish sources he has become conflated
with St. Patrick.
Goar (d. c. 575) A priest from Aquitaine, Goar resettled in the Rhineland
and, with the bishop's permission, became a hermit in the area north of
Coblenz. He fed and cared for the poor and sick in his cell, and won high
popular regard; one legend says that he was offered the bishopric of Trier,
but refused the office. Another legend tells that detractors falsely
accused him of fathering a bastard son.
Newlyn (Newelina) One of the patrons of Cornwall, where a city is named
after her, as well as a holy well and a church. We know nothing about her
life. Her cult is very old.
Sexburga (d. c. 699) A daughter of the king of East Anglia, Sexburga
married King Erkonbert of Kent and bore several children. After her
husband's death, she founded and became abbess of the nunnery of Minster in
Sheppey. After her sister died, Sexburga also became abbess of Ely. Until
the Reformation there was a strong cult of Sexburga in England.
Godeleva (Godeliva) (d. 1070) Godeleva married a Flemish nobleman at a
young age, who abused and after two years murdered her. Immediately after
her death she was honored as a martyr, and the cult spread quickly in
Belgium and France. Her relics were raised in 1084.
