medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. July) is the feast day of:
Abdon and Sennen (mid 3rd cent. or early 4th cent.) Abdon and Sennen were
Roman martyrs, whose veneration is attested since the fourth century. A
strong cult developed immediately after their death. According to legend,
the pair came from Persia.
Julitta of Caesarea (d. c. 303) St. Basil is the source for our knowledge
of Julitta's life and martyrdom. According to him, Julitta was a well-off
widow in Caesarea. A fellow townsman cheated her of her possessions and
then informed against her as a Christian. Legend tells that the city
authorities first tried to burn her to death, but that she remained
uninjured in the flames.
Peter Chrysologus (d. 450) Peter Chrysologus was one of the greatest
preachers of the fifth century, winning him the nickname "Chrysologus"
(golden speech). About 180 of his sermons are still extant. Peter was
born in c. 380 in Forum Cornelii near Imola in northern Italy. He became
bishop of Ravenna perhaps in 430/431.
Batho (Baturich) (10th cent.) Batho was count of Diessen and Andechs in
Bavaria. He successfully fought several times against Magyar incursions.
He also founded several religious houses and went on pilgrimage more than
once to the Holy Land.
Ingeborg (d. 1237) Ingeborg, a daughter of the king of Denmark, was born
in c. 1176. At the age of 17 she was married to the French King Philip II.
After a month, however, Philip set Ingeborg aside and married Agnes of
Meran in her place. Ingeborg appealed to the pope, who threatened Philip
with excommunication if he did not return to Ingeborg. Philip submitted,
but despised Ingeborg and had two children by Agnes. When Agnes died,
Ingeborg cared for the children. She won widespread admiration for her
kindness and patience in adversity.
