CHORD SEMINARS 2001/2002
CALL FOR PAPERS
Proposals for papers are invited in connection with the 2001/2002 CHORD
(Committee for the History of Retailing and Distribution) seminar series.
The series will consist of three sessions: in November 2001, February 2002 and
April 2002 (more precise dates to be confirmed). In the course of each session,
two papers will be presented, (of c. 30 minutes' length each) followed by
discussion.
The themes of the sessions will be:
Session 1. Approaches to retailing and distribution history: methods and
perspectives
The aim of this session is to discuss the different methods adopted by scholars
interested in retailing and distribution history, with particular reference to:
the 'gap' between those studies that attempt to provide a quantitative analysis
and those more interested in 'cultural' aspects; the possibilities (and
difficulties) of inter-disciplinarity and comparisons between different periods;
and the relationship between local, national and international studies.
Session 2. The histories of retailing, distribution and consumption
The aim of this session is to explore the relationship between retailing,
distribution and consumption. Among the issues that could be raised are: the
impact on retail development of 'consumer demand' and changing patterns of
consumption (and vice-versa); the role of commodities and of marketing; and the
relationship between purchase and consumers' identities.
Session 3. Dealers, merchants and retailers.
The aim of this session is to consider different types of retailers, from the
huckster and itinerant dealer to the large wholesaler and department store
proprietor/manager. Papers exploring different angles are welcome, including
retailers' identities, both as individuals and as corporate bodies; quantitative
and/or geographical/spatial analyses; inter-trade relationships; the association
with 'modernity' or 'tradition'.
Proposals are welcome for each of the three sessions, covering any geographical
area and historical period between c 1500 and 2000 (although papers for earlier
periods will also be considered). Alternative proposals for sessions (including
two papers) will also be considered. Speakers' travel expenses (within Britain)
will be refunded, and lunch will be available from c 13.00. Seminars will be
held at the University of Wolverhampton's Dudley Campus, and will take place
between 14.00 and 16.30
To submit a proposal please send a brief abstract (c 150 words) and title,
stating which session you would like to participate in, to the address below (if
possible by e-mail) by 28 August 2001
