Soft-Ware 2002: First International Conference on Computing in an Imperfect World
8-10 April 2002, Belfast, Northern Ireland
The University of Ulster, with Nortel Networks, is organising an international conference in Belfast
next year, on the handling of uncertain, incomplete information and knowledge in developing and
running computing systems. The conference will cover a number of areas of interest including
artificial intelligence, software engineering and information systems.
INVITED TALKS
Four prominent researchers, Dr. Piero Bonissone, Professor Sir Tony Hoare, Professor Michael
Jackson, and Professor Ray Paul, will present keynote addresses.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers describing original research on the theory and practice of coping with uncertainty in
computing, from any perspective, are invited. The submission deadlines are 1st September 2001 for
short submissions and full submission abstracts, and 15th September 2001 for full submissions.
Please refer to the conference web site for detailed guidelines on the preparation and submission of
papers:

PUBLICATION
Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings, which will be published by Springer-
Verlag. Extended versions of selected papers will also appear in a special issue of Soft Computing.
There will be a prize for the best paper overall.
WORKSHOP
The Second European EUNITE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Telecommunications
and Multimedia will take place on the first day of Soft-Ware 2002. The aim is to promote the
application of fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computation, machine learning, case-
based reasoning, agent based techniques and related technologies to problems in the area of
Telecommunications and Multimedia. The focus in EUNITE is on intelligent adaptive systems and
applications that require the ability to deal with uncertainty related problems by using the
techniques listed above. The purpose of the workshop is to stimulate cross-community discussion, to
collect state-of-the- art contributions and to show the applicability of academic work to real world
problems.
