Apologies for cross posting.
Please can you circulate the following details of a new Wellcome funded
Research Lectureship at Oxford Brookes University
Oxford Brookes University
Research Lecturership in Health Policy and Contemporary History
Wellcome University Award in the History of Medicine
The Wellcome Trust has agreed to fund the establishment of a permanent
post in the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences and Law under the
terms of its University Award scheme. The first three years of the
post-holder’s time will be devoted primarily to a research project
leading to the publication of a monograph. Thereafter she or he will
increasingly take on the usual range of responsibilities of an academic
member of staff at Oxford Brookes. The post-holder will add to the
strengths of the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society: Past and
Present and the Group status recently conferred on it by the Wellcome
Trust.
Applications are invited from candidates who are engaged in research
into the development of health policy and/or health care systems since
the beginning of the twentieth century. Possible areas for the
three-year research project might include the role of professional
organisations in shaping and implementing health care policy and
systems; the role of the consumers of health care; the impact of
scientific medicine on policy formation and delivery; the relationship
between public health and the nation-state. The ideal candidate will
have research and, ultimately, teaching interests in European and/or
comparative work.
This is a joint appointment between School of Humanities and the School
of Social Sciences and Law. The appointee will be expected to
contribute to the research and postgraduate programmes of both Schools.
Within the School of Humanities the appointee will be a member of the
History Department and the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society: Past
and Present. The Department focuses on British, European, and colonial
history from the eighteenth century onwards and several of its members
have research and teaching interests in the history of medicine. The
School of Humanities has a well-established MA programme, including a
named award in the History of Medicine, and a number of research
students working in the area.
The School of Social Sciences and Law, and in particular its Department
of Sociology and Social Policy, has a number of members of staff working
on health policy and health care systems. The Department is the
location of the University’s Centre for Social Policy, runs a successful
MA in Social Policy, and plays a major part in the Oxford Health Policy
Network, a joint venture with the University of Oxford.
The appointment procedure is in two stages. The University is now
inviting applications from scholars working in the field of health
policy/contemporary history. The successful candidate from this process
will then be required to submit a three-year research proposal to the
Trust. The confirmation of their appointment to the post will be
subject to final approval (including interview) by the Wellcome Trust.
Salary will be at an appropriate point on the University Lecturers
scales which are currently (June 2001) £15,349-£31,555.
Informal enquiries can be made to:
