medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello List.
I've surfed the net and found some discussions on the work "Analecta hymnica
Medii Aevi", but not what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of any attempt
to translate the more interesting hymns in this work into English
(preferably "King's English - not I.C.E.L. English!)? I'm curious about:
1) The original Fortunatus "Salve festa dies", not just the handful of
verses we use at Easter, Ascension & Pentecost.
2) Some of the other 60+ texts of "Salve festa dies".
3) Sequences, especially Marian, and that might fit into either the
"Victimae Paschali laudes" or "Veni Sancti Spiritus" meters.
I know there is a copy of "Analecta hymnica Medii Aevi" in the Fondren
Library at Rice University, but I'm not good enough in Latin to make usable
translations for hymns. BTW my son, Joshua, graduated from St. Thomas
Episcopal School Thursday evening, and his diploma is in Latin, and done by
hand! Yes, we had to send him to an Episcopal School (as cradle Catholics)
to get Latin (7 years and a number of awards)and Greek (3 years also with
awards)! Just where is R.C. education going to?! Even seminarians don't
get any of that! Anyway, he'll be going to The Citadel in August!
Thanks for your help.
