ACADEMIC PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY & PUBLIC HEALTH
SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
AND
PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING PROGRAMME (NORTHERN AND YORKSHIRE)

LECTURER (HONORARY)/SPECIALIST REGISTRARS IN PUBLIC HEALTH MEDICINE
(UP TO 3 POSTS)

The University Department seeks medical graduates committed to
public health research and teaching for appointment to up to three
Lecturer (Honorary) / Specialist Registrars in Public Health
Medicine. The appointees will be based in the Department of
Epidemiology and Public Health:

. Help administer and deliver undergraduate teaching in Public
Health Sciences or postgraduate teaching on the MSc in Health
Sciences.

. Contribute to the Department's research activity in one of its
established programmes.

. Participate in the Northern & Yorkshire
regional training scheme in public health medicine.

The Department has lively programmes of research in epidemiology
(particularly stroke, coronary heart disease and environmental
epidemiology) and health promotion (focusing primarily on approaches
to the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce
cardiovascular disease).

We see two potential routes into an academic career through the
Regional Training Programme. In the first, successful candidates
will have Part I MFPHM and be working towards Part II and CCST in
public health. They will be substantially based in the academic
department from appointment. In the second, successful candidates
will be entry level SpR appointments to the regional training
programme. They will initially start with a service attachment,
which will prepare them for Part I. During this time they will be
attached to a district, but will have additional teaching
commitments in the academic department, dependent upon previous
experience. After Part I, and completion of necessary service
attachment, their base will transfer to the academic department.

For a preliminary discussion of these posts contact Professor
Richard Thomson, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health (Tel:
0191 222 8760, e-mail [log in to unmask] ), Ms Denise Howel
(MSc Course Director, 0191 222 7381 or 5370, e-mail
[log in to unmask] ), or Dr Martin White (Senior Lecturer in Public
Health Medicine 0191 222 6275, e-mail [log in to unmask] ).

Should you wish to apply for these posts, please forward a completed
application form, CV and covering letter (indicating why you are
applying for this post) to the Human Resources Department, County
Durham and Darlington Health Authority, Appleton House, Lanchester
Road, Durham, DH1 5XZ.

GMC registration (or evidence of being GMC registerable for overseas
candidates) and two years of prior clinical experience are
essential. Appointed candidates will be given an NTN allocation and
Honorary Clinical Lecturer status as appropriate.

Appointments will be for a fixed period reflecting CCST dates and
subject to satisfactory progress in annual assessments. The
Postgraduate Dean confirms that this programme has the required
Educational and Dean's approval and will be part of the Public
Health Training Scheme.

Information packs and application forms are available from the Human
Resources Department, County Durham & Darlington Health Authority,
Appleton House, Lanchester Road, Durham, DH1 5XZ. Tel. (0191) 333
3327 (24 hour answer phone). Please indicate whether you wish to
receive an application form for either SHO (ref. Ph/150) or SpR
(ref. Ph/155 or the Lecturer position. Email:
[log in to unmask] You are advised to
supply a Curriculum Vitae as additional information, which will be
made available to the appointment panel at interview. CVs will not
be made available at the short listing stage so please complete
application forms in full.

Interviews are expected to take place the week commencing Monday 13 August 2001.
