Many thanks to all who responded to my query on social geography textbooks.
I've decided a compilation of books both inside and outside geography will
work best. Here is a list of compiled responses for those who might be
interested. LL
-- I think that Vivian Burr's "An Introduction to Social Constructionism"
(Routledge, 1995) is a really useful introduction to the subject. Although
she lectures in Psychology, it's a really accessible text that covers
issues of social construction and discourse analysis.
-- A new textbook coming out in August which has a large section on this is
Pain et al Introducing Social Geographies, published by Arnold.
-- The Open University reader published by Sage - Identity and Difference
by K Woodward is quite useful for students at this level.
-- Gill Valentine has just published a textbook on 'Social Geographies'
(Pearson Education).
-- Chris Philo (ocmp.) (1991) 'New Worlds, New Words: Reconceptualising
Social and Cultural Geography' (SCGRG)
-- Ian Cook et al (eds.) (2000) 'Cultural Turns / Geographical Turns'
(Prentice-Hall).
-- The Steve Pile and Nigel Thrift 1995 volume on 'Mapping the Subject'
might also contain a lot of useful stuff specifically on themes of
subjectivity and identity.
-- World of Desire: Realms of Power - Introduction to Cultural Geography by
Pamela Shurmer-Smith and Keith Hannam (Edward Arnold 1994). Covers the
issues that you identify below in simple terms with good case studies and
examples.
-- I teach a level 2 course called "People and Places" and use Crang's
"Cultural Geography", which I think is excellent. I've also just seen
Barker's "Cultural Studies", which provides very useful background.
-- There's a Routledge text (quite short) on Social Identity, which may now
be out of print.
-- A nice little intro (aimed at UK A level students, but I have found it
works at Uni level with extra readings) is David Abbott's Culture and
Identity, published by Hodder and Staughton.
-- There were also some good Open Univeristy Texts from the late 1990s (UK
again, I'm afraid) which dealt with representation and identity and these
may still be current, in a series called Culture, Media and Identities.
