Follow-up to my last message -
>We now know the CIA;'s views on the Valetta agreement - but has anything been heard from the metaldetectorists?<
my attention has been drawn to
The DCMS has informed the National Council for Metal Detecting that in the Valetta Convention
Article 3f - the need for 'prior authorisation of the use of metal detectors or any other detection equipment' applies only to 'archaeological investigation'.
Apparently, therefore, digging holes in a field to extract artefacts does not count as 'archaeological investigation'. So all those worried independent archaeologists have to do is stop calling themselves archaeologists and they can dig as many holes as they like!
