italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Un caro saluto a tutti,
I am a new member of the list, a PhD. in Italian from UC Berkeley
(1992), with a specialization in Renaissance literature and rhetoric.
My primary research interests are the influence of classical Greek and
Latin culture on Renaissance Italian culture, and the intersection of
works of Renaissance art and literature with their historical context.
I am currently finishing an article which argues that Machiavelli's
Prince is not a "manual for princes," but actually a very clever and
subtle condemnation of the Renaissance prince. To show this, I have
recourse to classical rhetorical theory, as well as other similar
"ironic" texts from Renaissance Europe which conceal their true meaning
under various guises. I am also interested, as a long-range research
project, in the voices which dissented from the increasing
centralization of power and "homogenization of culture" in Renaissance
Italy, from both the popular and elite levels of society. I would be
very happy and interested to correspond with anyone on the list who
shares these interests.
In reference to the question about "road rage" in Italian, I append
the following message from a colleague here at Purdue University: "I've
never heard of this expression before either in English or (tantomeno)
in Italian, so I wouldn't know how to translate it . I guess it's
cultural related. Violenza al volante non mi sembra che esprima il
concetto a fondo. I suppose we just use "'e cuorna" dalla "scuola
anapoletana". Sfoghiamo tutte le nostre frustrazioni non con fucili, ma
con gesti inconsulti, ma alla fin fine, molto piu' innocui!"
Having experienced the sconvenienze of road rage (both as a giver
and as a recipient), I concur wholeheartedly with my colleague's
comments!
Ciao,
James O. Ward
