Dear Tony/ Ernie
Events are also progressing quite well in Europe. I would suggest that a
good starting point would be the proceedings of the UNEP workshop on "eco
efficient management of industrial parks" hosted by Dow at their Schkopau/
Leipzig 'Value Park' last February. One outcome of this was a network of
practioners who are putting the eco industrial park concept into practice in
Europe at various locations, different spatial scales and varying levels of
diversity of participants. This workshop was the European precursor to the
Manila event for Asia/Pacific region. The CD (of the proceedings and prep
papers) is available from UNEP: TIE in Paris, France: contact; Ms. Wei Zhao.

Via the BCSD network we are also currently responding to interest expressed
in the concept of eco industrial parks / industrial symbiosis etc at the
Imbizo conference held two weeks ago in South Africa. Again a fledgling
network of companies and advisors is now forming as an outcome. The
potential in SA involves 'greenfield' (integrated with an aluminium smelter
development) and 'regeneration' ( better integrating an existing petro
chemicals/ steel complex with satellite industries) eco industrial park-type
developments.
Kind regards

Dear Tony,
I would suggest that this function is already performed quite well by Ed
Cohen-Rosenthal's group at Cornell Work and Environment Institute. If you
see missing activities in what they offer (as newsletter, papers, links and
regular roundtables) perhaps RPI could join their effort to fill the gaps
rather than creating a separate support group. Perhaps one area would be
increasing the European participation.
Also, an Asian Eco-Industrial Network has formed as a result of the
conference in Manila in early April. See www.iephil.com for info on this.
with warm regards,
Ernie Lowe
