Bernhard Schlink in conversation with Colm Tóibín

BERNHARD SCHLINK is one of the best-known names in
contemporary German writing. His novel Der Vorleser / The Reader
(1995/1997) in particular received enormous critical and popular
acclaim, and he has written five other novels including
Liebesfluchten (2000) which is forthcoming in English as Flights of
Love. Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law and
Philosophy of Law at Humboldt University in Berlin, Schlink has
played a large part in the re-imagining of Germany at the end of the
20th century, acting as Consultant on the draft of the Constitution
for the German Democratic Republic in 1990 as well as on the
Lithuanian Constitution in 1992. Most recently he has been a
Fellow at the Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York
Public Library.
