medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My input is late as I have been visiting my grand daughter ( 3 weeks old).
However, I have just finished re reading the Protoevangelium. My
understanding is that Joachim's annual offering at the temple was not
accepted because he had failed to reproduce a child - as you say, a sin in
the Jewish tradition and a hint that all is not right within the couple, as
to their spirituality and their duty.
There are many interesting parallels with Mary & Joseph, Elizabeth &
Zacharias and Jesus.
1-There is the barrenness as with Elizabeth & Zacharias.
2- the trial/wandering without food and water in the wilderness for 40
days - Joachim/Jesus
3- the angel appearing to Zacharias & Elisabeth as well as Joachim & Anna -
to proclaim that there will be a child. The angel appears to Maryin the
Annunciation and to Joseph to confirm that Mary has been faithful and that
the son she carries is of God
4- the elderliness - past childbearing age of Elisabeth/ Zacharias &
Joachim/Anna.
Joachim and Elisabeth proclaim that their child will be given to the temple
for the glory of God as she was a gift of God. John the Baptist is also
given to God's work. And we all know that Jesus was the son of God.
The parallels are vast and interesting to study. I have just touched the
surface here.
regards
carol
