medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
George Ferzoco has once again asked me to organize the
sessions to be sponsored by medieval-religion at next
year's Kalamazoo conference, and once again I have spent
some time digging through the list archives in search of
potential topics. I have come up with the following:
1. The Presentation of Relics. Possible topics: how were
relics "framed" by architecture/reliquaries/etc., what sort
of relics were most popular, trends in the form and
function of reliquaries.
2. The Making of Saints. Possible topics: whether saints
are born or made, conversions, what makes a person saintly.
3. Monasticism. I would suggest concentrating on
Benedictines for this session, as they usually seem to get
passed over at Kalamazoo.
4. Medieval Religions. Possible topics: interreligious
conflict or cooperation, contacts between Christians, Jews,
and Muslims, heresy vs. orthodoxy.
I will now make the same plea that I made last year: If you
feel strongly that we should or should not include any of
these suggested session -- or even better, if you would
like to volunteer a paper -- please contact me off-line.
If you have a suggestion for another session topic, please
post it on-line so that I can gauge the list's reaction.
I would also like to take a moment here to report that the
medieval-religion sessions at Kalamazoo this year went
well. Both sessions were well-attended -- even the one at
8:30 Sunday morning -- and the papers sparked very
productive discussions. I would like to take a moment here
to thank the six presenters: Phyllis G. Jestice, Patricia
McGurk, Steven Bednarski, Sarah Hamilton, Wendy Reardon,
and Amy Appleford. Thanks are also do to Sherry Reames for
chairing the Sunday session.
