Hi Bob,
It's a bit worrying to find out that your contractors found nothing
useful on the ADS website with regard to what kinds of digital
information should be included in a site's excavation archive. Our Guide
to Good Practice on Digital Archives from Excavation and Fieldwork was
designed to do just this!

Perhaps they weren't looking in the correct place... The Guide was
written by a team of contributors from contracting units, museums and so
on and I hope that it does illustrate the types of information that
should / could be included in an archive. I would point them
specifically at Section 3.2 which looks at levels of digital archiving
and is based around the deposition of archives as outlined Map2

Table 3 in Section 5.4 may also be of some help as it outlines the file
formats that we people can deposit data with us, the formats that we
migrate the deposited files into for long term archiving purposes and
those formats that we use on our website for present day dissemination

I would hope that we can discuss these matters further at the SMR User
Group Meeting next week in York. With all best wishes,
Damian
