Dear Editor,
The article "Absurd extent of PC suggests a dangerous blindness to fact"
by Robert Tracinski
http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/05/05/opinion/ that appeared on
May Day blames individuals with disabilities such as myself for the
discrimination we experience. And when we go to court to defend our rights
he calls it a charade and deliberately does not mention the ongoing right
wing trend to use state rights in the courts to gut the ADA.
I was born with a disability and as part of the disabled community, I can
say that we do not want sympathy from Robby for our being unable to hear
music, see a movie, or walk a mountain trail. Spare me your pathetic babble
about our place in society. What we want is our right to participate in
doing these things. Either join us in our struggles for equality Rob or get
out of the way. We are no longer going to live as second class citizens.
You should take heed from Helen Keller who at the turn of the century warned
that most disabilities were created by industries and war under an economic
system that prioritizes profits before people. That is why it is also
insulting to working people that your article appeared on May Day. A day
that working people aroung the world celebrate our struggles for rights as
laborers for decent living conditions and safe workplaces without being
crippled by our work. And when you become disabled, you had better hope that
the rights that we are defending now will be there for you.
