FYI
I am the disability representative on the Attorney General's NGO
Human Rights Forum, her in Australia and have lodged a question on
notice regarding this issue. See Below. I have also presented a paper
on this issue (and other human rights violations) to the AG, which is
on the web. A little out of date I am afraid.
Question on notice for AG's NGO Forum on Human Rights 19th April 2001
In the light of the self immolation of Shahraz Kayani, whose daughter- a
young disabled woman - was refused entry to Australia, what action does
the Attorney General intend to take to review the Australian legislation
that prevents the entry of families with disabled members irrespective of
what positive contribution those people might be able to make to Australian
society and economy? Does he feel that decisions to exclude people based
on their disability, rather than include them on the basis of their
abilities, sends a message to the Australian community which significantly
undermines the Human Rights of people with disabilities resident in
Australia ?
