Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF) pulp

"The weight of evidence for the environmental quality of Elemental
Chlorine-Free (ECF) pulp rolls on - as does its dramatic market performance.
The Alliance for Environmental Technology had a panel of eminent scientists
look at chlorine dioxide bleaching, the process behind ECF pulp, to evaluate
its effect on water quality.
The panel found that "switching to ECF reduces the environmental effects of
chlorinated compounds to the point of insignificance."
Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) bleaching was once trumpeted as the superior
bleaching process. However, even the world's largest TCF pulp maker admits
that the TCF process is no better for water quality.
Now, more doubts about TCF are emerging. Scientific reports suggest that the
ECF process may be less demanding on forest resources. And that ECF pulp may
also be stronger, meaning it can be recycled more often."
