Recently I witnessed a rather amusing exchange involving the use of so-called
ART. A medical doctor was present while a chiropractor was discussing how he
successfully used a therapeutic system known as ART with a female athlete
whom he was treating. The doctor asked the chiro exactly which ART method he
used and he proceeded to describe patterns of manual pressure and stroking
while the athlete moved various limbs in different directions.
The doctor was astounded and asked how on earth could ART possibly help the
woman whom he was treating. He said that the results spoke for themselves
because she was now running without discomfort and stiffness. The doctor
asked if the discomfort was associated with the woman's menstrual cycles and
if she had now managed to fall pregnant. He was also most perturbed that
chiros were now willing to treat with ART methods, which he thought were
confined to medical practitioners alone. It was now the chiro's turn to be
astounded. He just could not understand why the doctor chose to focus on ART
and how it possibly related to pregnancy.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, in the medical profession, the acronym
"ART" stands for "Assisted Reproductive Techniques" which are used by some
medical specialists to help couple conceive. Thus, ART includes in-vitro
fertilisation (IVF), gamete intrafallopian tube transfer (GIFT) and the use
of donor eggs to impregnate women who cannot conceive. To the chiro, "ART"
meant "Active Release Techniques", an acronym invented by Michael Leahy DC to
describe an adaptation of a collection of various release methods for soft
tissue treatment. It appears as if the term "ART", unknown to Leahy, has
been used in the medical and medical insurance professions for many years.
The doctor just could not believe his ears when he heard that deep manual
tissue stroking could make a woman conceive!! (OK, no cute remarks here,
please!)
Yet another example of how important it is for definitions to be as universal
as possible or to be explained each time that they are used!
