medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Patrick,
The quatuor tempora are, in liturgy, the Ember days, distributed through
the year in order to assign three special feast days to each season of the
year. There were different traditions (see Berno's _Dialogus super quatuor
temporum jejunia_, PL 142,1087ss.), but judging from the article "Ember
Days" in the Catholic Encyclopedia
(http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05399b.htm) it seems safe from the 11th
century on to put them on "the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after 13
December (S. Lucia), after Ash Wednesday, after Whitsunday, and after 14
September (Exaltation of the Cross)."
Best,
Otfried
