Hadrian, as part of his refoundation of Jerusalem, is supposed to
have built a temple to Venus on Calvary. The choice of location might
suggest that this place was recognized as a sacred site which needed to be
"converted" to sacralities more acceptable to Rome: if so, then it affects
the debates over the location of Christ's tomb and over the origins of
Christian pilgrimage .
For sources see David Golan., "Hadrian's Decision to Supplant
`Jerusalem' by `Aelia Capitolina'," _Historia_ 35 (1986): 226-39. For some
questions about the evidence, see Annabel Jane Wharton, "The Baptistery of
the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and the Politics of Sacred Landscape,"
_Dumbarton Oaks Papers_ 46 (1992):3 21-22.
