I could only access one of these on the web site mentioned by Tom
Izbicki. Two illustrations of this manuscript, corresponding to
"Humility" (fol. 6v) and "Ecstacy" (fol. 11r) are illustrated in Henk
van Os, The Art of Devotion in the Late Middle Ages in Europe
1300-1500 (Amsterdam, 1994), p. 64, along with several illustrations
from Cristoforo Cortese (active 1360-71), Saints in Prayer (Siena,
Bib. Com., MS T.I.2, fol. 57r).
I would like to thank all those who responded to my original query on
the pose and gesture of prayer. I have quite a few leads to follow
up. Would anyone have any fuller bibliographical information on
Beriou, Berlioz and Longac, eds, Prier au Moyen Age? Judith
Rosenberg kindly offered to photocopy some of this for me, but it
sounds worth reading in toto, and I'd like to order it through
Interlibrary Loans.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
