medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Tom:
I'm completing a book on such lives. Or sort of. There are a number of
cases of close male associates of holy women who write about them and
include their own experiences in their reflection, one way or another, and
I'm writing on a series of nine of these, beginning with Ekbert and
Elisabeth of Schonau and ending with Dorothy of Montau and John
Marienwerder. "Confessor," I find, isn't always the best way to describe
the relationship. In some cases it is; I remember, for instance, from
previous emails to the list that you're working on Margaret of Cortona and
Giunta Bevignati. But Jacques de Vitry, for example, refers only obliquely
to having heard Marie d'Oignies' confessions. Peter of Dacia is another
example; he includes himself in his vita (admittedly a very strange vita) of
a woman (Christine of Stommeln) more than any other hagiographer I know of,
yet he never says anything about hearing her confession.
