The correct title for the Treaty of Rome is the Treaty establishing the
European Community (abbreviated to the EC Treaty), which is its official
name as referred to in other Treaties and EC secondary legislation (see also
the English Style Guide of the Commission's Translation Services).
If reference to amending legislation is made, though not necessary, it
should be sufficient to refer to it "as amended" as listing the amending
Treaties you should be aware the EC Treaty has been amended by a number of
instruments of which the most important are:
The Single European Act;
The Treaty on European Union; and
The Treaty of Amsterdam.
(The Treaty of Nice is not yet in force)
The EC Treaty is the revised name for the Treaty establishing the European
Economic Community (the EEC Treaty) also known as the Treaty of Rome. The
renaming results from Article G of the Treaty on European Union (the EU
Treaty).
The Treaties establishing the European Communities (the Community Treaties)
collectively refer to the ECSC Treaty, the EC Treaty and the Euratom Treaty.

Subject: Treaty of Rome
Dear colleagues
Should the right reference to the Treaty of Rome be:
"the Treaty establishing the European Community, as amended by the Treaty on
European Union and the Treaty of Amsterdam"
or
"Treaty establishing the European Communities, as amended by the Treaty on
European Union"
or any other name......
